Como, July 1, 2024 - Following the success of the exhibition, which has registered more than 3,000 participants since its opening last May, a series of collateral events and novelties for the public - including in particular the inauguration of the new museum space VIS Comensis, as well as new contemporary works and installations - that will accompany the major exhibition "The Catalogue of the World: Pliny the Elder and the History of Nature," on view until Aug. 31, 2024 in Como, a never-before-seen narrative dedicated to the figure and life of Pliny the Elder, from antiquity to the present day.
Presented by the Alessandro Volta Foundation and realized on the occasion of the Plinian Bimillenary celebrations with the curatorship of Gianfranco Adornato, Professor of Archaeology at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, the exhibition traces the events of Pliny the Elder - a citizen of Como -, highlighting the extraordinary fortune of his work through the centuries and its relevance in contemporary society, engaged in a profound reflection on environmental protection and man's relationship with nature.
The exhibition itinerary-which features more than forty works from major Italian museum institutions from the city's main institutions-will unfold from the prestigious venues of the Former Church of San Pietro in Atrio and the Palazzo del Broletto-with a refined layout curated by Architect Paolo Brambilla-involving city places through an open-air route, all the way to the new VIS Comensis multimedia space.
"The new initiatives integrated with the Exhibition intend to further involve the citizenship and anyone who is in the city of Como; the intention of making the exhibition widespread intends to fit all within the city walls. - Declares Luca Levrini, President of the Alessandro Volta Foundation and Chairman of the National Committee for the celebrations of the two thousand years since the birth of Pliny the Elder. - Not only the artistic beauty of what the Exhibition proposes, but also to stimulate suggestions and reflections; in fact, let us not forget that the aim of making plastic Plinian thought is to raise awareness of classical culture for the challenges of today. Separate discourse the new multimedia museum space "VIS Comensis"; permanently, unlike the exhibition, we wish to make known and celebrate the memory of those who influenced both the history of Como and humanity, as a model, as a stimulus of pride to activate the responsible sense of active citizenship."
Within this artistic and territorial framework, three events in particular will be scheduled on July 5, 12 and 13 to accompany the continuation of the exhibition.
Opening the summer schedule will be Friday, July 5, at 5:30 p.m. at the Palazzo del Brolettol's venue, the inauguration of two new works by artists Fabrizio Musa (Como 1971; lives and works between Como and New York) and Giuliano Collina (Intra-Verbania 1938; lives in Como), which will further enrich the section of the exhibition dedicated to the works of international contemporary artists of the caliber of Luigi Spina, Fabio Viale, Giulio Paolini, Andy Warhol and Cy Twombly, inspired by the work and history of Pliny the Elder.
More in detail Pliny the Elder.txt, created by Fabrizio Musa in acrylic on canvas, belongs to a cycle of works dedicated to the most illustrious figures of the Como scene. A blue variant of it was chosen for the exhibition to represent Pliny the Elder on the commemorative stamp on the occasion of the Bimillenary of his birth. Giuliano Collina's Pliny the Elder artwork, on the other hand, depicts, in charcoal on paper, the famous naturalist as he appears in the aedicule on the left on the facade of Como cathedral, sculpted by the Rodari brothers. The two works will remain on view at Palazzo del Broletto in the area dedicated to contemporary artists until the end of the exhibition.
